| Grape Seed Extract helps maintain
antioxidant health. It contains oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC),
which are naturally occurring bioflavonoids. Grape Seed Extract is a
nutritional supplement that helps strengthen vessel walls, prevent the
breakdown of blood vessels and protect damaged vessels from excessive
leaking. Grape Seed Extract helps improve cosmetic and medical
conditions related to varicose and spider veins. |

What is Grape Seed?
The active ingredient in Grape Seed are OPCs. OPC supplements
are made from two sources, grape seed (Vitis vinifera) and pine
bark. The cardiovascular benefits of drinking red wine are due
in part to the antioxidants from OPCs. Grape seed extract can be
purchased as a powdered beverage or encapsulated extract. Grape
seed supplements should be standardized as an assurance of the
amount of OPCs they contain. Pine bark extract is found as
encapsulated extract. It should also be standardized as an
assurance of the amount of OPCs it contains. Pycnogenol is a
trademarked name for pine bark extract.
Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) are a group of flavonoids
that have powerful antioxidant potential. Antioxidants protect
cells from oxidative damage by neutralizing free radicals. Free
radicals are unstable molecules that in their bid to become more
stable must bump into healthy cells and cause damage. They are
produced in the body as a byproduct of normal metabolism or can
come from pollutants, UV radiation, infections and the liver’s
processing of toxins.
Why do I need Grape Seed?
Grape Seed helps strengthen the entire vascular system. OPCs
prevent capillary leakage in the legs, eyes and skin reducing
fluid retention. Without OPCs, destructive enzymes are free to
attack the structure of the blood vessels. Free radicals further
degenerate these vessels, causing lesions that become traps for
bad cholesterol (LDL). Once LDL cholesterol has been trapped it
attracts calcium. Cholesterol and calcium build up to form
plaque, which narrows the arteries and encourages blood clot
formation.
It also strengthens collagen. Collagen is an essential and major
component of muscles, tendons, ligaments, teeth, gums, eyes and
blood vessels. OPCs attach themselves to collagen where it
blocks the harmful effects of destructive enzymes, such as
collagenase. This protective action strengthens collagen
protein, improving elasticity and resiliency. Although no
substance can completely prevent the aging process, Grape Seed
helps to avert premature aging by reducing free radical induced
weakening of collagen.
Collagen, the protein constituent of connective tissue, exists
throughout the body in pairs of strands. Hydrogen bridges
connect these strands and give collagen its strength. As we grow
older, collagen is weakened by excessive cross-linking.
Cross-linking occurs when the bonds between collagen strands
become weakened by free radicals. OPCs help form and strengthen
the hydrogen bridges that hold the collagen strands together.
Collagen that is weak and inflexible contributes to premature
aging. Visible signs of weak collagen are wrinkles and sagging
skin. The OPCs other than those supplied by Grape Seed support
the body's ability to maintain and enhance the health of
connective tissue and the elasticity of skin.
CLINICAL STUDIES ON GRAPE SEED: In studies, OPCs are shown to be
far more powerful than antioxidants like vitamins E and C.
Additionally they work with the primary antioxidant in the
liver, glutathione and recycle vitamin C so it can continue to
fight free radicals. OPCs are easily taken in by the body and
even cross the blood brain barrier to provide protection to our
brain and nerves. OPCs are used for cardiovascular health
because they strengthen the collagen lining of vessels, thus
increasing circulation, and decreasing inflammation and blood
clots. OPCs have anti-aging properties because they protect the
body from environmental pollutants, keep tissues, like the skin,
elastic and keep the immune system in good working order (to
prevent cancer formation). |
